Hyundai Compact EV Expected to Debut in Q1 2027; January Reveal Reported

The India-focused electric SUV, codenamed HE1i, is expected to have two range options. Prices, battery specifications and delivery dates remain unannounced.

17 October 2026

Hyundai’s upcoming compact electric SUV is now expected to make its India debut in the first quarter of 2027, with January emerging as the latest reported target. The update gives prospective buyers a narrower window to watch, although Hyundai has yet to publicly confirm a January unveiling date.

According to Autocar India’s, sources familiar with the programme indicate a January debut for the model, internally known as HE1i. The sub-four-metre SUV is being developed specifically for India and is expected to be manufactured at Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu.

A revised timeline, with the launch schedule still to come

The latest report follows earlier indications that the vehicle would arrive before the end of 2026. In September, Autocar reported that Hyundai Motor India managing director and CEO Tarun Garg had outlined that earlier timeline in an interaction with Autocar Professional.

Hyundai’s own 2026 CEO Investor Day announcement also referred to a fourth-quarter introduction for an India-focused electric SUV. The January timing should therefore be treated as a reported update to the programme, pending a fresh announcement from the manufacturer.

For buyers, the distinction between a debut and a market launch matters. An unveiling can establish the vehicle’s design and positioning without opening bookings or confirming prices. The reported January window does not, by itself, establish when customers will receive their cars.

Two range options expected; battery figures remain under wraps

Autocar reports that the HE1i will use Hyundai’s E-GMP (K) platform, also associated with the Inster sold overseas. Standard Range and Long Range versions are expected, but detailed specifications for the Indian model remain undisclosed.

The connection with the Inster provides some background to the project, but its overseas specifications should not be carried across to the HE1i. Indian battery capacities, certified driving range, motor output and charging times need their own confirmation.

The two-version approach could let Hyundai address different budgets and driving patterns. How useful that choice becomes will depend on the price difference and the equipment offered with each battery. A lower-priced version would be easier to assess once buyers know whether it retains the charging capability and features they need.

Battery sourcing is another part of the story

Earlier reporting also outlined Hyundai’s battery supply plans. Autocar’s September report, citing Garg, said the compact EV would initially use Svolt cells, with locally produced Exide cells intended to follow.

That is background to the vehicle’s development, rather than an established explanation for the latest timing. The available reports do not confirm why the expected debut has moved to January.

For an owner, the supplier’s name alone will say little about the ownership experience. Battery warranty terms, charging performance and service support will provide more useful information when Hyundai releases the final specifications.

Hyundai confirms focus on infotainment and driver assistance

Hyundai’s Investor Day release said its new India-focused electric SUV would offer a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 driver-assistance technology. It also described the model as localised and designed for India. Detailed equipment lists and availability across variants were not provided in that announcement.

The compact SUV format puts the project on the radar of buyers researching vehicles such as the Tata Punch.ev. However, a meaningful comparison will require Hyundai’s final prices, cabin dimensions and battery specifications.

The next announcement needs to answer the questions that a revised debut window cannot: what the car will cost, how far each version can travel, and when deliveries will begin. Until then, January 2027 is the reported date to watch.
