That figure was given to the Lok Sabha on 21 July 2026, and it is roughly four times what the network looked like eighteen months earlier. Range anxiety in this country is now less about whether a charger exists and more about whether the one you are driving towards is working and free. Start with our city guides, which list stations by locality with the connector type and operator against each one. That tells you what you actually need before setting off: whether the plug fits your car, and who runs the site. For the last leg, open the operator’s own app. It is the only place that shows whether a specific gun is free right now, and it is where you start and pay for the session anyway.

A generic maps search will plot pins near you, and it is fine for a rough look. Two things trip people up. A pin tells you a station exists, not whether the connector matches your car. And pins linger long after a charger has been removed or gone offline. On a city errand that costs you five minutes. On an intercity route it can cost you an hour, so treat any pin as a lead rather than a confirmation until the operator app agrees with it.

What changed for EV drivers this year

Four shifts worth knowing about before you plan your next charge.

The network roughly quadrupled

The jump from around 12,000 stations to 52,718 did not happen evenly. Most of the growth landed in the eight metros and along a handful of busy corridors, because that is where the demand and the grid capacity already were. Smaller cities and state highways are still catching up. If you drive mainly within a metro, charging has stopped being a planning exercise. If your route runs through district towns, it still is.

Charging in the afternoon is now cheaper than charging at night

This one surprises people, because it is the opposite of how home electricity usually works. Under the current tariff structure, distribution companies charge EV charging stations about 0.7 times the average cost of supply during solar hours, roughly 9 am to 4 pm, and about 1.3 times outside them. Cheap solar power in the middle of the day gets passed down the chain.

Whether your operator passes that saving on to you varies, and not all of them do. It is worth checking your usual station’s app at 11 am and again at 9 pm before you assume the rate is flat. If it moves, and you have somewhere to be during the day anyway, that is free money.

Highways are mostly covered now

Roughly 91% of national highways have a charger somewhere within about 50 km, which is the threshold at which intercity driving stops needing a spreadsheet. Delhi to Jaipur to Ahmedabad, and Mumbai to Pune to Bengaluru, both have several fast-charging hubs along the way. The remaining 9% matters more than the number suggests, because it tends to be the stretches where you would least want to be short.

Networks are starting to talk to each other

Until recently, using four networks meant four apps, four wallets and four sets of card details. Operators have begun signing roaming agreements so one app can start a session on another network’s hardware. It is early and coverage is patchy, but it is the direction of travel. For now, keep two or three operator apps installed and topped up, especially before a long drive.

The main components of an EV charging station are the connector (plug), the cable, the power cabinet and the payment/RFID unit.

For a highway trip, Tata Power EV or ChargeZone give you the best odds of finding a working charger every 50–80 km. For everyday city charging near home or office, Statiq and the local state utility are usually cheaper. Are EV charging stations free?

Mostly no. A few malls, hotels and offices still offer free AC charging, so the odd free EV charging station exists — but every major DC fast network now charges per unit or per session. Check the operator app before you plug in.

How do EV charging stations make money?
