VinFast VF 3

VinFast continues building its India presence. The Vietnamese manufacturer, backed by Vingroup, has been establishing operations in India including manufacturing and retail plans. The VF 3 is expected to serve as its entry level product, targeting the budget electric segment where competition remains thinner than in the midsize SUV space.

The budget electric car segment in India remains underserved. Despite strong search demand for affordable electric cars, the sub ₹10 lakh segment has very few genuine options compared with the ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh bracket. A VF 3 priced near ₹7.5 lakh would enter a market with real appetite and limited supply, though buyer confidence in a new brand's service network will be the deciding factor.

The 18.64 kWh battery and 215 km claimed range define exactly what the VF 3 is for. In real Indian conditions with the air conditioning running, expect around 150 km to 175 km, which comfortably covers a week of typical urban commuting between home charges. Push it onto a highway and the picture changes quickly, with sustained speeds bringing real range closer to 110 km to 135 km while the 100 km/h top speed makes the experience unpleasant regardless. This is not a criticism, since VinFast has not positioned the VF 3 as a highway car. Performance follows the same logic. The rear mounted motor produces 43.5 PS and 110 Nm, which is modest on paper but feels adequate below 60 km/h where instant electric torque does the work. The rear wheel drive layout is the interesting part, since it is genuinely rare at this price and gives the car a lighter, more balanced turn-in than a front drive equivalent. Combined with a 4.4 metre turning circle and a 3,190 mm footprint, the VF 3 is unusually easy to place in dense traffic.

The VF 3 has not been crash tested in India, so no rating exists yet. Bharat NCAP testing has been mandatory for new models since October 2023, which means an India launch would require assessment. Expected equipment includes dual front airbags as a minimum, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors, though VinFast has not published a confirmed India safety specification. One genuine structural advantage comes from the battery. Mounting a heavy pack low in the floor drops the centre of gravity substantially, which matters on a body this tall and narrow. Micro cars with high centres of gravity can feel unsettled in quick direction changes, and the battery placement counteracts that more effectively than any electronic aid. Buyers should verify the final airbag count and safety equipment at launch rather than assuming global specification carries over, since manufacturers frequently adjust equipment levels for the Indian market.

DC fast charging takes the VF 3 from 10 to 70 percent in approximately 36 minutes, which is quick partly because the battery is small. AC home charging fills it in roughly 6 to 8 hours, making overnight charging the sensible routine. A CCS-II port is expected for India as the established standard. The practical picture for a car like this is straightforward. With a small battery and city focused range, home charging covers essentially all normal use, and public fast charging becomes a convenience rather than a necessity. That works in the VF 3's favour, since it reduces dependence on the public charging network. What matters more is whether you have a reliable place to plug in overnight. Without home or workplace charging, a 150 km to 175 km real world range combined with public charging costs of ₹18 to ₹25 per kWh against ₹8 to ₹9 at home erodes much of the running cost advantage.

VinFast has not confirmed India warranty terms for the VF 3. In other markets VinFast has offered battery subscription arrangements, where the buyer pays a lower vehicle price plus a monthly battery fee, with the manufacturer retaining battery ownership and replacement responsibility. Whether that structure comes to India has not been announced, and it materially changes the ownership calculation. The prevailing Indian market norm for outright battery ownership is 8 years or 1,60,000 kilometres, and VinFast would face competitive pressure to match this if selling batteries outright. Confirm both the warranty structure and the state of health guarantee at launch, since these determine what degradation is actually covered.

The VF 3 is one of the few genuinely characterful cars headed for the Indian budget segment, and character is in short supply at this price. The boxy proportions, upright stance, and rear wheel drive layout give it a personality that most city electric cars lack entirely. Four proper seats, a 4.4 metre turning circle, and DC fast charging make the practical case reasonable for what it is. The honest limits are clear and VinFast has not disguised them. Real world range of 150 km to 175 km and a 100 km/h top speed confine this to city use, which is fine if that matches your driving but disqualifying if it does not. The larger question is not the car but the brand. VinFast's service network in India remains limited, and for an electric vehicle that is not a minor detail, since high voltage systems need trained technicians. Buyers in metros with a nearby service point face a very different proposition from buyers in smaller cities. Wait for confirmed pricing and check service coverage in your area before deciding.

The MG Comet EV is the most direct comparison, and the two split cleanly. The Comet has MG's considerably wider service network and an established presence buyers can assess, plus a smaller footprint that suits the tightest urban parking. The VF 3 counters with four proper seats rather than a 2+2 arrangement, rear wheel drive, more ground clearance, and a design that stands out far more. On range the two are broadly comparable, both being city focused. Against budget electric hatchbacks from Tata in the ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh range, the VF 3 loses on range, practicality, and service reach while winning on distinctiveness and price if it lands near ₹7.5 lakh. Against petrol hatchbacks, the running cost gap is large, roughly ₹1.15 per kilometre against ₹4.68, but the purchase premium and range limitation mean the VF 3 only makes sense as a city car or second vehicle.

Wait for confirmed India pricing and specification before committing, since VinFast has announced neither. When it does launch, three checks matter more than the specification sheet. First, locate your nearest VinFast service point and ask what electric vehicle support is actually available there, because a limited network is the single biggest risk with a newer brand. Second, confirm whether the battery is sold outright or offered on subscription, as this changes the total cost picture substantially and VinFast has used both models in different markets. Third, be realistic about the 150 km to 175 km real world range, and only consider the VF 3 if you can charge at home and your driving genuinely stays urban. If you need a car that occasionally handles a highway run, look at something larger. Do not pay a booking amount before VinFast formally opens orders in India.

At an estimated ₹8.5 lakh on-road and around 8.5 km per kWh real world efficiency, running cost works out to approximately ₹1.15 per kilometre at ₹8.5 per kWh. Over 10,000 km a year, which is realistic for a city focused second car, that is around ₹11,500 in electricity. A petrol hatchback at 22 km/l and ₹103 per litre costs approximately ₹4.68 per kilometre, or ₹46,800 over the same distance, giving an annual saving near ₹35,000. Annual maintenance on a small electric car typically runs ₹5,000 to ₹9,000 against ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 for a petrol equivalent. The payback calculation depends heavily on how much you drive. At 10,000 km a year, recovering a purchase premium of roughly ₹2.5 lakh over a comparable petrol hatchback takes six to seven years. At 20,000 km a year it drops to around three years. Low mileage buyers may not recover the premium within a typical ownership period.

The VF 3 would qualify for the standard Indian electric vehicle incentives if launched. Section 80EEB of the Income Tax Act allows individual buyers a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh on interest paid on an electric vehicle loan, though buyers at this price point often fall in lower tax brackets or purchase outright, which reduces the practical benefit. GST on electric vehicles is 5 percent against 28 percent plus cess on petrol cars, already reflected in ex-showroom pricing. State-level benefits matter more at this price. Delhi offers a purchase subsidy alongside a registration fee waiver, Maharashtra and Gujarat offer purchase subsidies, and states including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan waive road tax on electric vehicles. On a car priced around ₹8 lakh, a full registration waiver alone saves ₹55,000 to ₹80,000 in most states, which meaningfully shortens the payback period. State policies change frequently, so confirm current terms before purchase.

Service intervals are expected at 15,000 km or annually, following the pattern of comparable small electric cars. The electric drivetrain removes engine oil and filter changes, spark plugs, air filters, fuel filters, and clutch wear entirely. What remains is tyre rotation, brake fluid checks at extended intervals since regenerative braking substantially reduces pad wear, cabin air filter replacement, and an annual battery health diagnostic. Expect ₹5,000 to ₹9,000 annually against ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 for a petrol hatchback. The material consideration is not cost but access. VinFast's service network in India is limited compared with manufacturers who have operated here for decades, and electric vehicles cannot be serviced at an ordinary local garage because high voltage systems require trained technicians and specialised equipment. Confirm the location of your nearest VinFast service point before buying, and factor in the travel involved if it is not in your city.
