EV Charging Stations in India — Your 2026 Guide
How many chargers there are, where to find them and what they cost — everything, step by step.
India crossed 12,000+ public EV charging stations in early 2026, up from fewer than 1,000 in 2021 — and the count climbs every month. This guide takes you through it step by step: how to find an EV charging station near you, what each charger type means, what charging actually costs, how to set up charging at home, and a city-by-city directory of where the chargers are. Whether you drive a Tata Nexon EV, MG Windsor, Hyundai Creta Electric or a Mahindra BE 6, the same public network serves you.
How to find an EV charging station near you
The fastest way to find an EV charging station near you is a live map app. Three cover almost everything in India:
EV Unlock city guides
Our city-by-city directory maps every network’s charging locations with connector types and timings — the easiest place to start your search.
Live map search
Search “ev charging stations near me” in a maps app to see the nearest points with live availability, connector type and plug count.
Operator apps
Tata Power EV, Statiq and ChargeZone apps — needed to start and pay for a session on that particular network.
Hunting for the cheapest option? A search for free EV charging stations near you mostly returns a handful of malls and workplaces — truly free public charging is rare now (full cost breakdown further down). On a highway run, filter the map to “DC fast” so you only see the quick chargers and find the nearest one that fits your connector.
EV charging stations map: the fastest way to see chargers near you
Google Maps is the simplest electric vehicle charging stations map for India. Open the app, search “EV charging stations map” or “public charging stations near me” and it plots every pin it has data on, tagged with the network name and, for most Tata Power EV and ChargeZone points, live availability. PlugShare layers on driver-reported working status, which the plain map often misses. Each operator app also carries its own charging station map, but it only shows that one network’s pins — useful once you already know which network you want to charge on, less useful for a first search.
Two things trip people up on a charging station map: pins that show a station exists but not whether the connector matches your car, and pins for chargers that have since been removed or gone offline. Always tap through to the operator app before you drive somewhere on the strength of a map pin alone, especially on an intercity route where a dead charger costs you real time.

Types of EV Chargers in India
From home wallboxes to highway rapid chargers — know what each type means before you charge.
Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 — what's the difference?
Every charger on the map is one of three levels. The level tells you how long a stop takes and whether your car can use it.
Level 1 · AC Slow
Overnight home charging — the cheapest and slowest option.
Level 2 · AC Fast
Offices, malls and apartments. Full charge in 4–6 hours.
Level 3 · DC Fast
20% to 80% in 30–60 min at highway and city hubs.
What is a Level 3 (DC fast) EV charging station? It feeds direct current straight into your battery, skipping the car's slower onboard AC charger. This is what people mean by EV fast charging stations — and the fastest EV charging stations (100–180 kW highway rapids) reach 80% in just 15–25 minutes. The main components of an EV charging station are the connector (plug), the cable, the power cabinet and the payment/RFID unit.
Connectors in India: CCS2 (standard DC fast on almost every car — Tata, MG, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra), CHAdeMO (older, now rare), Type 2 (standard AC) and Bharat AC-001/DC-001 (low-cost Indian standards on entry-level EVs).
Major Charging Networks in India
Nine major operators run India's public EV charging infrastructure.
Which is the best EV charging network in India?
There is no single best EV charging station brand for every driver — the right pick depends on where you drive and what your car needs. Here is how the top networks actually compare for four-wheelers:
| Network | Best for | Coverage | Typical DC fast cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Power EV | Widest highway and city coverage | 3,500+ points nationwide | Rs 15–20/unit |
| ChargeZone | Higher-power DC hardware at malls and highways | 2,000+ points | Rs 17–22/unit |
| Statiq | Residential societies and tech parks | 1,500+ points | Rs 15–20/unit |
| Ather Grid | Two-wheelers only (proprietary connector) | 1,400+ points | Not usable for four-wheelers |
| EESL / CESL | Lowest government-backed rates | Govt offices and PSU sites | Rs 12–15/unit |
For a highway trip, Tata Power EV or ChargeZone give you the best odds of finding a working charger every 50–80 km. For everyday city charging near home or office, Statiq and the local state utility are usually cheaper. If you drive an Ather scooter rather than a car, Ather Grid is the only network built for you — its connector does not fit four-wheelers.
Together these EV charging station companies run India’s public network. Tata Power EV and ChargeZone have the widest four-wheeler coverage, Ather Grid leads on two-wheelers, and government bodies (EESL/CESL, state utilities) fill the gaps.
EV Charging Station Cost in India
What you actually pay at home, at public AC points and at DC fast chargers.
EV charging station cost in India comes down to where you charge. Home AC charging is cheapest at ₹7–9 per unit; public DC fast charging runs ₹15–22 per unit, and high-power highway rapids can touch ₹20–25. Here's the full picture for a typical 40 kWh car:
| Charger Type | Cost per Unit | Full Charge* | Time to 80% |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC Home Wallbox | Rs 7–9/unit | Rs 280–360 | 6–8 hrs |
| DC Fast (Public) | Rs 15–22/unit | Rs 600–880 | 45–60 min |
| DC Rapid (100+ kW) | Rs 20–25/unit | Rs 800–1,000 | 15–25 min |
*Based on 40 kWh battery. Actual cost varies by vehicle and state-of-charge.
Are EV charging stations free?
Mostly no. A few malls, hotels and offices still offer free AC charging, so the odd free EV charging station exists — but every major DC fast network now charges per unit or per session. Check the operator app before you plug in.
How do EV charging stations make money?
Operators resell electricity per unit (kWh) with a margin, sometimes adding a session or parking fee, plus software subscriptions and on-unit ads. A thin-margin, high-volume business — which is why free public charging keeps shrinking.
Tata Power EV charging stations cost around Rs 15–20 per unit for DC fast charging, with AC charging typically Rs 2–3 cheaper per unit. ChargeZone runs slightly higher at Rs 17–22/unit on its higher-power DC hardware, while government-backed EESL/CESL points are the cheapest at Rs 12–15/unit. The exact rate on any of these networks varies by state and by charger power rating, so always check the live tariff in the app before you start a session — it is shown before you confirm the charge.
Home, Solar, Portable & Commercial Charging
Beyond public points — the other ways Indians charge EVs.
Home EV charging station
The cheapest, most convenient setup. Installation runs ₹25,000–60,000; a 7.4 kW wallbox charges in 4–6 hrs at ₹7–9 per unit.
Solar EV charging station
Rooftop solar + wallbox brings running cost close to zero. With net metering, daytime solar charges the car and exports the surplus.
Portable EV charging station
A travel charger that plugs into a 15A socket as a backup. Slow at 2–3 kW, but every EV in India ships with one.
Commercial EV charging station
For malls, societies and highways: a DC fast unit, load sanction, civil work and a management platform. Payback depends on footfall.

The practical stuff that makes public charging painless.
EV charging etiquette
Move your car at 80%, never unplug someone else's, don't block a bay with a petrol car, and report dead units in the app. Watch for EV charging station signs — many bays are reserved and towable.
Pros & cons
Pros: far lower running cost, fast-growing coverage, and home charging that means you wake up full. Cons: DC chargers can be busy, a charge takes longer than a fuel stop, and rural coverage is thin.
Maintenance & upkeep
Reliability keeps improving as operators invest in EV charging station maintenance and faster repairs, but you'll still meet the odd dead unit — another reason a live app beats a static map.
