Budget EV competition is intensifying for the first time since the Tiago EV launched. For most of its life the Tiago EV has faced little serious opposition in the sub-Rs 10 lakh electric segment. That is changing as more manufacturers examine India's entry-level EV space, which puts pressure on Tata to keep improving the package rather than relying on the head start it built.

Tata's charging network expansion strengthens the Tiago EV case. Tata has continued investing in fast charging infrastructure across Indian highway corridors and cities, which directly benefits Tiago EV owners since the car supports DC fast charging. Access to reliable public charging affects a budget EV's usability far more than a few kilowatts of peak charging rate.

The gap between certified and real-world range is where most Tiago EV buyer disappointment originates, so it deserves plain treatment. The Long Range pack is certified at 315 km ARAI and delivers roughly 230 km to 265 km in real city driving with the air conditioning on. The Medium Range is certified at 250 km and delivers roughly 180 km to 210 km. Neither is a failing of the car. ARAI testing runs at moderate speeds without climate load, and no electric vehicle from any manufacturer matches its certified figure in Indian summer traffic. What matters is planning around the real number. Highway driving punishes the Tiago EV more than most, because aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed and a tall, narrow hatchback pushes a lot of air. At a sustained 100 km/h expect closer to 190 km to 215 km from the Long Range. Performance follows a similar pattern of city competence and highway limitation. The Long Range's 75 PS and 114 Nm make it lively up to about 60 km/h, where instant electric torque genuinely outpaces the petrol Tiago in traffic. Above 80 km/h the reserves thin out noticeably, and overtaking on a two-lane highway requires more planning than the low-speed responsiveness might lead you to expect.

The petrol Tiago holds a 4 star Global NCAP rating for adult occupant protection, and the EV shares the same body structure. Buyers should verify whether an EV-specific rating has been published rather than assuming the petrol result transfers directly, since battery weight alters crash dynamics and manufacturers occasionally see different outcomes between powertrain variants. On equipment, dual airbags are standard with four available on higher trims, alongside ABS with EBD and Corner Stability Control across the range. The IP67 rated battery pack matters practically in India, since it protects against electrical hazard during monsoon driving and waterlogged roads. A high voltage automatic disconnect isolates the battery in a collision. The clearest gap is ADAS, which the Tiago EV does not offer in any form. At this price that is a defensible decision rather than an oversight, though buyers who specifically want driver assistance features will need to look elsewhere.

The Tiago EV supports three charging methods, and understanding the difference between them shapes the ownership experience considerably. DC fast charging takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 57 minutes at a compatible public charger, which makes intercity travel genuinely practical rather than theoretical. AC charging at 7.2 kW, available on higher trims, gives a full charge in roughly 4 hours and is the best home setup if you can install a wallbox. The standard 3.3 kW charger takes 7 to 8 hours, which works overnight but is impractical for daytime top-ups. Two practical points worth knowing. First, charge rate tapers sharply above 80 percent to protect cell health, so the last 20 percent takes disproportionately long at a fast charger and is rarely worth waiting for. Second, public DC fast charging costs considerably more per unit than home electricity, often Rs 18 to Rs 25 per kWh against Rs 8 to Rs 9 at home. The Tiago EV's running cost advantage depends heavily on charging at home, and buyers without that option should recalculate the savings before committing.

Tata covers the Tiago EV with a 3 year or 1,25,000 km vehicle warranty and an 8 year or 1,60,000 km warranty on the battery and motor, with roadside assistance included. The battery warranty is the more significant of the two, since battery replacement is the single largest potential expense in electric vehicle ownership and this coverage effectively removes that risk for most owners. The term worth examining closely is the guaranteed state of health percentage, which defines how much capacity loss is covered rather than simply how long the warranty runs. Extended warranty plans are available through Tata Motors authorised service centres for buyers planning to keep the car beyond the standard term.

The Tiago EV succeeds by being honest about what it is. It does not pretend to be a highway cruiser or a technology showcase. It is a well-judged city electric car sold at a price that makes the switch from petrol genuinely affordable, backed by a service network that reaches places other EV manufacturers do not go. That last point deserves more weight than it usually gets. For a buyer in a smaller city, the difference between a manufacturer with 4,000 service outlets and one with 200 is not a specification detail. It determines whether the car is practical to own at all. The compromises are real and worth stating. The 240 litre boot is genuinely small, the Medium Range's 61 PS struggles on highways, and there is no ADAS at any price. But the fundamentals are sound. DC fast charging works, the 8 year battery warranty removes the biggest financial fear, and the running cost saving of roughly Rs 39,000 a year at average mileage is substantial for a household in this price bracket. If your driving is predominantly urban and you can charge at home, this remains one of the most rational car purchases available in India.

Against other budget electric options in India, the Tiago EV's advantages are body practicality and service reach. Smaller electric city cars undercut it on price but compromise heavily on space, offering two-door or 2+2 layouts rather than a proper 5-seat hatchback. Against Tata's own Tigor EV, which shares its platform, the Tiago is more compact and cheaper while the Tigor adds a boot that solves the Tiago's clearest weakness. Against the Tata Punch EV, which sits above it, the Punch offers a larger battery, more ground clearance, and stronger road presence for a price premium of several lakh, and is the better choice for anyone regularly driving beyond the city. Against the petrol Tiago, the electric version wins on running cost and refinement while losing on purchase price, boot space, and highway capability. The honest comparison for most buyers is not against other EVs but against a petrol hatchback, and there the deciding factor is annual mileage. Below roughly 10,000 km a year, the purchase premium takes too long to recover.

Choose the Long Range unless your driving is strictly local and predictable. The extra range and the more capable 75 PS motor address the two areas where the Medium Range feels limited, and the gap in real-world usability is larger than the specification difference suggests. Prioritise a trim with 7.2 kW AC charging if you can install a home wallbox, since dropping full charge time from eight hours to four changes how the car fits into daily life. Before committing, do three things. Confirm current pricing at a dealership, since Tata has revised Tiago EV prices several times and published figures date quickly. Check what state subsidies and registration waivers apply where you live, as these can shift the on-road price by a lakh or more. And be realistic about boot space by actually loading your usual luggage into it, because 240 litres sounds abstract until you are packing for a family trip. If your annual mileage is below 10,000 km, run the payback arithmetic carefully before choosing electric over petrol.

At roughly 5 km per kWh real-world and Rs 8.5 per kWh, the Tiago EV costs approximately Rs 1.70 per kilometre to run. Over 15,000 km a year that is around Rs 25,500 in electricity. The petrol Tiago at 23.84 km/l and Rs 103 per litre costs approximately Rs 4.32 per kilometre, or Rs 64,800 over the same distance, giving an annual saving of roughly Rs 39,000. Annual maintenance runs approximately Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 against Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 for the petrol version, adding another Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 of yearly saving. Combined, expect to save around Rs 46,000 to Rs 49,000 a year at average mileage. Against a purchase premium of roughly Rs 3 lakh over an equivalent petrol Tiago, payback arrives at approximately six to seven years at 15,000 km annually, or three to four years at 25,000 km. High-mileage users benefit substantially. Anyone driving under 10,000 km a year may not recover the premium within a typical ownership period, which is the calculation worth running honestly before buying.

The Tiago EV qualifies for the standard Indian electric vehicle incentives. Section 80EEB of the Income Tax Act allows individual buyers a deduction of up to Rs 1.5 lakh on interest paid on an electric vehicle loan, worth roughly Rs 46,800 in tax saved over the loan tenure for someone in the 30 percent bracket, though buyers in lower brackets will save proportionally less. GST on electric vehicles is 5 percent against 28 percent plus cess on petrol cars, which is already built into the ex-showroom price. State-level benefits vary considerably and matter a great deal at this price point. Delhi offers a purchase subsidy alongside a registration fee waiver, Maharashtra and Gujarat offer purchase subsidies, and states including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan waive road tax on electric vehicles. On a car costing Rs 10 lakh, a full registration waiver alone can save Rs 70,000 to Rs 1 lakh, which meaningfully shortens the payback period. State policies are revised frequently, so confirm what currently applies in your state before finalising the purchase.

Service intervals fall at 15,000 km or annually, whichever comes first. The electric drivetrain removes engine oil and filter changes, spark plugs, air filters, fuel filters, and clutch wear, which together account for the bulk of what petrol Tiago owners pay at each service. What remains is tyre rotation every 10,000 km, brake fluid checks at extended intervals since regenerative braking cuts pad wear substantially, cabin air filter replacement, wiper blades, and an annual battery health diagnostic. Expect Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 annually against Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 for the petrol Tiago. One area where costs run slightly higher is tyres, since the EV carries roughly 175 kg more than the petrol version and that extra mass accelerates wear, so budget for replacement closer to every 40,000 to 45,000 km. Tata's EV-trained technician network is the most extensive in India, which is a practical advantage that becomes obvious the first time something needs attention in a city where rival manufacturers have no EV-capable workshop.
